Abstract (Document Summary)

From the salsa-lite hootenanny Spice Up Your Life to the she-powered positivity of Never Give Up on the Good Times, the Spice Girls tell it to the world that gave them fame and nice clothes: They accept the social responsibility that goes with throwing the world's biggest pajama party.

So, unlike certain bellicose professional athletes who throw people through plate-glass windows, the Girls _ Mel B, Mel C, Geri, Emma and Victoria _ are prepared to serve as role models. They want to teach the world to sing. Somebody has to. So they sing about Spice, because that is what they know. It's "Spice" as metaphor for "Life"; hence, Spice Up Your Life. Brilliant!

The rock-stylin' Move Over _ previewed as a Pepsi jingle _ comes closest to replicating the dippy-hop vibe of the Girls' first hit, Wannabe. Too Much is a sincere stab at instructional r&b, wherein the Spice-ettes counsel moderate living to their young audience. The Lady Is a Vamp, a swing tune, celebrates everything Spice.
