Abstract (Document Summary)

Correction, letters (4/15/88): A letter to the editor April 14 from Chas. P. Higgins of St. Petersburg, titled Out of touch, contained a typographical error. The letter should have said, ""Even our own Gov. Martinez, so far out of touch as well that when he refers to a "cure' and "cure rates' (in a recent speech to professionals during a drug and alcohol prevention conference) he perpetuates the myth that the general populace holds that alcoholism and drug abuse is a moral issue and not a disease.''

Even our own Gov. Martinez, so far out of touch as well that when he refers to a ``cure`` and ``cure votes`` (in a recent speech to professionals during a drug and alcohol prevention conference), he perpetrates the myth that the general populace holds that alcoholism and drug abuse is a moral issue and not a disease. They suggest that using willpower is a ``cure.`` May I suggest that they, if ever inflicted with diabetes, or diarrhea, for that matter, try willpower. Chas. P. Higgins, St. Petersburg Defining when life begins

Editor: Re: Panel calls for leaner meats, dairy products, April 7, was of great interest to me since I work in a butcher shop. Yes, people are asking for leaner meats but I find it hard to believe that 34-million Americans are overweight simply because of eating too much ``animal fat.`` Would it cut obesity and heart disease merely by producing leaner and often drier and tougher cuts of meat? I do not feel it is the responsibility of the food industry to control the calories being consumed by the public. The fault lies with we Americans who eat the four-ounce lean hamburger then drive to the store for a gallon of ice cream or a candy bar to snack on while sitting dormant in front of the TV. I think it is time we take responsibility for ourselves and not depend on the food industry to provide us with built-in self control. Julie Smart, Dunedin Fibber McGee's Closet
