That was the message of a study released Wednesday by the National Sleep Foundation, showing nearly two of three every people fail to get the recommended eight hours of sleep each night. About a third of those surveyed get six hours or less.
"Right now, today, there are millions of Americans walking around who are profoundly sleepy, and they don't even know it," said Dr. William C. Dement, chairman of the NSF, a non-profit organization that promotes sleep-related education and research.
Dement noted that sleep-deprived drivers create a serious danger to themselves and others. The NSF study reported that more than half of those surveyed said they had driven while drowsy in the past year, with nearly one in four admitting they had actually fallen asleep behind the wheel.
