Abstract (Document Summary)

A COMMUNITY activist protested yesterday that "social cleansing" was being carried out in her area in order to facilitate large- scale private housing development in the north side of Glasgow, writes John MacCalman, Local Government Correspondent.

Eleanor Brown, joint chair of Ruchill Strategy Group, told city councillors yesterday that a masterplan to "pull" the vibrant West End housing market into Glasgow North was an exercise in social exclusion, not social inclusion.

While councillors approved the application, the discussion ranged beyond the Ruchill site issue to encompass a master plan by the umbrella regeneration organisation, Glasgow Alliance, to create new communities in the Ruchill/ Keppoch area which includes some of the most deprived areas in the city.
