Safe Haven | Courthouse's children's waiting room keeps kids out of courtroom fray
[N Edition]
The San Diego Union - Tribune
-
San Diego, Calif.
Before the Vista children's waiting room program began in 1987, children had to sit in the hallway while waiting for their parents to resolve conflicts in a nearby courtroom. In the hallway, children often came into contact with people they were testifying against, saw their parents in handcuffs or were exposed to other angry courtroom participants. The Vista location was the second children's waiting room established in the county. However, this waiting room is only open for a limited time each week due to a shortage of volunteers. Parents often have to reschedule court dates around the waiting room's schedule. Myres hopes that a law passed in July 1999 will allow the Vista waiting room to extend its hours. The act allows courts to charge a $2 to $5 filing fee in civil cases to fund the children's waiting rooms. Although the program will continue to rely on volunteers and donations from private parties, the fees have enabled Myres to staff the waiting rooms. She is seeking volunteers and a full-time staff member for the Vista room. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner. Further reproduction or distribution is prohibited without permission.
