SIMONIDES, FRED EMIL May 28, 1920 to May 8, 2006 Fred, 85, served with the 11th Airborne Division 187 PIR F Company in Sapporo during WWII. A lifelong San Diegan; he was a devoted employee of Teledyne Ryan for 43 years. He served as a member of the 11th Airborne Division Association, an active member of the Memorial Day Committee of Fort Rosecrans, and a member of the Freedoms Foundation of San Diego. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His entire family will miss his sense of humor and quick wit. He was always involved with his children's and grandchildren's activities, including, music, sports and schooling; a lifetime member of the PTA. He devoted two years of his life teaching at City College for aeronautical training. He enjoyed traveling, with his wife, throughout the United States; he loved his country dearly. Fred was preceded in death by his daughter Carol Simonides. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, LaVonne; three children: son Martin Simonides, daughter Pamela Morn, husband Cliff and son Jeffrey Simonides, wife Veronica; one stepson, Gary Ingram; 6 grandchildren: Dion, David, Alicia, Brandon, Darrin and Luke and 2 great-grandchildren: Cailyn and Landon. In his final hours Fred was surrounded by his beloved family and friends. Please sign the guest book at obituaries.uniontrib.com LUCE, JUNIOR, EDGAR ARTHUR August 9, 1924 to May 8, 2006 Surrounded by his loving family, Edgar Arthur Luce, Junior passed away peacefully at San Diego's Scripps Mercy Hospital on Monday, May 8, 2006 after suffering complications due to pneumonia. Ed was is a native son of San Diego and comes from a long line of heroes and leaders. His grandfather Moses Luce was decorated for his bravery in the Union Army during the Civil War, and his father, Edgar Senior, was a widely respected San Diego judge. Ed continued his family's tradition of community leadership as a lawyer, arbitrator, community volunteer and civic leader serving on numerous boards of professional, political and charitable institutions over more than half a century. Ed attended Florence Grammar School, Roosevelt Junior High, and San Diego High School, all in San Diego. He earned B.A. (1946) and L.L.B. (1948) degrees from Stanford University. He joined Luce, Forward, Hamilton and Scripps in 1948, becoming a partner in 1955. He served as Managing Partner from 1978-1983 and retired in 1997 after a long and very successful practice. Ed remained active as a sportsman and sports fan all his life. He coached his Presidio Little League teams successfully for 35 years. Ed supported Stanford athletics as a fund raiser and booster and helped launch the Senior Olympics in San Diego. He excelled on the senior tennis circuit. Ed was a devoted father and husband and is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 59 years and four children, Edgar III, Constance, Jennifer and Deborah. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Lucas and Sonya Jubb; Edgar IV, Thomas and Harrison Luce; Alexandra and Adam Howard; and one great- granddaughter, Nayezca Guzman-Jubb. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, May 12, 2006 at First United Methodist Church of San Diego at 2111 Camino del Rio South, San Diego. A private burial service for immediate family members only will occur later that day.
