Abstract (Document Summary)

Matthews went on to attend Deep Springs College, in the high desert east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The college, part of a working ranch, accepted just 12 students a year, all male. The students helped run the ranch, Matthews said, harvesting hay, milking cows and slaughtering chickens. "It was the only time in my life when I was a vegetarian," he said, smiling.

Matthews environmental interests led to his involvement in Friends of Eugene, then Southeast Neighbors. Many residents were opposed to housing developments near the Amazon Creek headwaters, which they continue to fight.
