In October 1990, Democrat Harry Lonsdale rode high in his race for the U.S. Senate. He trumpeted his strong environmental views and twice posed before a Portland hazardous waste site to accuse his opponent, U.S. Sen. Mark Hatfield, of being bought off by polluting corporations. Lonsdale surged ahead in the polls. Then four ex-employees of Bend Research, a company founded by Lonsdale, charged that the firm routinely poured water tainted with chemicals into the ground outside its Tumalo facility, near Bend.
