Abstract (Document Summary)

Hewlett-Packard and Compaq compete with EMC in different segments of the data storage market. Compaq focuses on selling smaller storage hardware while Hewlett-Packard sells high-end data storage products to huge enterprises. EMC serves both large and small customers.

The new company, which will keep the Hewlett-Packard name, will have a full range of storage offerings, and will be put in a position to compete head-on with EMC. By some data storage analysts' estimates the merger creates a new king of the data storage hill.

Compaq declined 67 cents to $10.41. On Tuesday, Hewlett-Packard fell 19 percent, and Compaq dropped 10 percent. Hewlett-Packard has fallen 71 percent in the past year; Compaq has dropped 68 percent.
