[Michael A. Luke] said about 24 million Americans suffer from varicose veins, which usually result from problems with valves within the veins of the leg. If the valves fail to close property, the veins collect blood in the leg instead of moving it up to the heart, and the accumulated blood causes the veins to bulge and become visible.
