With Jorge Vargas at the controls, Waquoit easily maintained the lead. He pulled away from Ascool, who had won the Northern Dancer at Pimlico last month, in the final furlong after shaking off a challenge from that rival at the top of the stretch.

Ascool fired his Sunday punch at the top of the stretch, but Vargas went to the whip and Waquoit gradually pulled away.

"Waquoit was just too much horse," the Maryland rider said. "I sent my horse, but we couldn't catch him. Waquoit was too much."
