Bleeding from progesterone is normal

Abstract (Document Summary)

Please write about the hormone, progesterone. I am a female of 60. I have been on a low dosage of estrogen hormone for many years because of severe vaginal dryness. I am now told to take this additional hormone, the progesterone, to ward off any danger of cancer. I notice that I have light bleeding a couple of days since taking the progesterone.

If estrogen is given without progesterone, there is a slightly increased risk of uterine cancer. And even though that risk is small, the progesterone is added to the estrogen therapy to rule out the possibility. Since you have been on your estrogen for a long period, your doctor simply wanted to provide you with that extra safety margin.
