Abstract (Document Summary)

A Connecticut state agency had tentatively rated 240 acres in North Stonington - only two tenths of a mile from the Hopkinton, R.I., line - its top choice for a low-level radioactive waste dump, but it has since virtually ruled out the site on the basis of scientific criteria.

The North Stonington site, which straddles the Voluntown line, is just a half-mile from the southern tip of Hopkinton's Yawgoog Pond, home to a large Boy Scout camp.

E. Robert Corrigan, president of Hopkinton's Town Council, hadn't heard that North Stonington was one of eight finalists for the dump until a reporter asked him about it yesterday.
