Bud Selig dismisses rumor that MLB blocked Expos trade
[All Edition]

Providence, R.I.
"I first heard that (speculation Thursday) night," said [Bud Selig] from his office in Milwaukee. "I haven't spoken to (Expos president and Rhode Island native) Tony Tavares or (general manager) Omar Minaya in a while. I saw Omar in Cooperstown at the Hall of Fame ceremonies last week, and we talked about things, but not personnel. Selig added that he wasn't troubled by the sizeable transfers of cash in deals made between big-market clubs such as the Red Sox and Yankees and money-conscious small-market clubs such as the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates. Actually, Selig allowed the Red Sox to break the rules slightly. In an apparent oversight, he gave approval to the Sox to include $1.2 million - or $200,000 more than should have been allowed - in the deal to get Scott Williamson, then prevented the Yankees from giving the Reds $3 million in another deal for Reds third baseman Aaron Boone.
