Mayor Lincoln D. Chafee wrote to five Democratic City Council members Wednesday, urging them to think again before chopping his proposed 65-cent tax increase back to zero.
The five Democrats on the nine-member council - Linda Sullivan, AlFerruolo, Donna Travis, Carlo Pisaturo and Gene Kelly - held a news conference last week on the steps of City Hall. They said Chafee could finance his $174.9 million budget for the next fiscal year without the tax increase he seeks.
Chafee asked the council yesterday not to allow the public hearing "to deteriorate into a strict partisanencounter."
