BOX: Depression findings Two-thirds of women without any form of social support were likely to have depression symptoms. One in six women who have symptoms of depression were abused as children. More than half of single women rearing a child younger than 18 suffer from depressive symptoms. Sixty-eight percent of women who struggled to pay for basic needs such as food, telephone service, gas and electricity reported feeling depressed. More than 40 percent of Hispanic women reported experiencing some depressive symptoms, compared with 37 percent of non-Hispanic white women. SOURCE: Commonwealth Fund 1998 Survey of Women's Health.
