VANITY Fair editor-in-chief Graydon Carter - the most courageous leader of the resistance to Mayor Bloomberg's smoking ban - has thrown in the towel.

Carter, who was ticketed three times by city storm troopers for smoking in his own office at Cond Nast headquarters, said a year ago: "I find Mayor Bloomberg's smoking laws to be nothing short of asinine and their enforcement to be nothing short of harassment."

With Carter having abdicated as the smoking community's most forceful and articulate advocate, his followers felt adrift yesterday. "Who will step up and speak truth to power?" wondered one oppressed smoker. "Fran Lebowitz? Denis Leary? Britney Spears? Who will speak for us?"
