Abstract (Document Summary)

More recently, Toys 'R' Us has been selling a line of collectors edition Cabbage Patch dolls that are larger and more expensive than the originals. Though popular, the 20-inch dolls, which sell for close to $50, have yet to gain the widespread appeal that made the original Cabbage Patch Kids a must-have toy for several seasons.

"We were lucky with Care Bears to be on the front line of that trend," said Jay Foreman, who founded Play Along in 1999, when he secured the rights to the Britney Spears doll. "Now with Cabbage Patch we have an opportunity to bring the biggest toy of the '80s back to kids."

Hasbro purchased the rights in 1990, after Coleco went out of business. At the time, company executives predicted Cabbage Patch would eventually become the company's second-best-selling toy, after G.I. Joe, but the dolls never took off.
