Abstract (Document Summary)

[Joe Torre] said [Derek Jeter]'s condition hadn't gotten any worse since Friday night. Miguel Cairo played shortstop and led off in Jeter's place yesterday, going 1-for-4. Homer Bush made his first start of the season and went 0-for-3 as the second baseman.

Actually, both Torre and Mel Stottlemyre had initially indicated that [Jose Contreras] would make his next start Tuesday. But after Stottlemyre studied videotape and spotted flaws in the Cuban righty's mechanics, they pushed him back to Saturday.

Alex Rodriguez reached base safely in his 43rd straight game, the longest Yankee stretch since Jeter reached in 57 straight games over the 1998 and '99 seasons. Before the game, Rodriguez received the Babe Ruth Award (for most homers in the majors last season) from Ruth's daughter and grandson.
