Abstract (Document Summary)

SEN. Hillary Clinton's trouble with PETA isn't going away. The kerfuffle over her new sheared mink coat that her staff is trying to pass off as velvet has spurred PETA President Ingrid Newkirk to tell the horrific tale of "Mr. Velvet," a red fox who lost a leg to a steel trap. "His eyes were wide as saucers as his tongue pounded the air with each labored breath," Newkirk wrote of her furry friend before he was released from the trap, which "took all my strength to open and release the crushed white bones of his paw." She also claims that Clinton's cover-up of her cover-up is disappointing and wants the truth. "I live in the hope that Americans will continue to demand honesty from their politicians, as well as empathy and kindness." A rep for Clinton reiterated the party line: "The only thing we've said about this is what we say again: The senator has owned a mink coat for over 25 years. Because it was worn, she traded it in."

TAKI Theodoracopulos sounds like he's ready to go to war for the right of women to strip, and men to watch them. The co- founder of the American Conservative is riled up because he sent "a high-class stripper" to the "downtown dive" where his son John-Taki was celebrating his 22nd birthday. "I rang it, spoke to the barman- owner, got permission and dis patched a high-class stripper to do what strippers do while he was cutting the cake. Everything went hunky-dory until thestripper began to undress. A large, drunk, fearsome-looking man at the bar objected. The boys were polite and told him they had permis sion. No go. 'I'm a Muslim,' said the fearsome one, 'and this is against my religion.' When J.T. told him that drinking, too, was a no-no where Muslims were concerned, the fearsome one threatened vio lence. The boys caved in, as did the barman. The stripper fled. End of party." Ironically, Taki is vehemently against the U.S. inter vention in Iraq.

-Paris Hilton, [Barbra Streisand] -Although they've been married 5 1/ 2 years, it's obvious James Brolin and Barbra Streisand are still crazy in love and as inseparable as a pair of newlyweds at this party in Hollywood. [Giulio Marcocchi/Getty Images] --Beyonc shakes thingsup in Cannes at the NRJMusic Awards cere mony, which kicks off the 38th annual MIDEM, an international trade show for the video- and recorded-music publishing industry.
