Abstract (Document Summary)

"Sudan is a disaster area for human rights," [BUSH Tough] said, citing UNICEF estimates that 12,000 to 15,000 people are now held in slavery there. Most are said to be black Christians and animists enslaved by Muslims.

"We must turn the eyes of the world upon the atrocities in Sudan," added Bush, who said he's asking the head of USAID to make sure aid to the needy in Sudan isn't diverted by Sudanese officials.

At a time of chilly U.S. relations with China, Bush also denounced Beijing for religious "persecution", including "harsh and unjust" attacks on traditional Tibetan religion and "arrest and abuse" of the Falun Gong movement.
