INJURY BUG TAKES BITE OUT OF FASSEL'S BENCH

Abstract (Document Summary)

[Jim Fassel] yesterday announced that two important backup players, cornerback Andre Weathers and tackle Chris Ziemann, are done for the season after tearing anterior cruciate knee ligaments. While these are not crushing blows, they do hit key areas and make it more imperative for the Giants that their starters remain intact.

This is especially cruel news for Weathers, who last Sunday made his debut this season. A rookie in 1999, Weathers showed plenty of promise before tearing his left ACL in the ninth game of the season. The Giants were cautious in bringing Weathers back, but he reinjured the same knee in the 24-7 victory over the Eagles, will again need surgery and faces another year-long rehab.

Depth takes a hit here. Weathers last week served as the nickel back, and if Reggie Stephens (sprained ankle) is not able to play, little-used Ramos McDonald moves into the nickel back role. As for backup tackle, Fassel said guard Mike Rosenthal, who has not played yet this season, will be converted back to tackle and activated this week.
