Execs at The Firm say the acquisition of the sneaker brand that hit its heyday in the 1970s and '80s after athletes such as Muhammad Ali, Joe Frazier, Earl Campbell and Ken Stabler sported the shoe, is in keeping with its strategy to become a well-rounded brand management company.

Insiders say The Firm will target the brand to fans of bands such as Korn, Limp Bizkit and Stained - the more controversial rockers.

"Pony was always an edgy brand," said [David Schulte]. "There were certain kids who wore Pony's - and there were those who wore Nikes."
