'TRIP' LOOKS FANTASTIC, BUT IT'S FAR FROM LIGHT

Abstract (Document Summary)

The film's narration is constructed mostly out of actual reports from the local newspaper, (whose English editor is voiced by Ian Holm) and excerpts from the records of the nearby Mendota insane asylum (whispered by John Schneider).

Occasionally, a touch of Euro condescension creeps into the film, especially in the scenes of contemporary life in Black River Falls (baton twirlers on parade, and the like), which English writer- director James Marsh intercuts with stories from the past.

Although he's not as snotty as, say, Louis Theroux, Marsh simply cannot resist cheap ironic shots at the supposed crassness of modern American life. One example is the scene in an old people's home that shows the assembled elderly staring vacantly into space while a singing group performs the national anthem.
