LASER WHIZ WINS OSCAR ; BUT DON'T SAVE INVENTOR BALA MANIAN A SEAT AT THE AWARDS

Abstract (Document Summary)

The basics behind the technology, using lasers in optical imaging, have played a part in most of [MANIAN]'s start-ups. And there have been several - almost as many as there are Adam Sandler movies, and just as lucrative, making Manian a multimillionaire.

His first, Digital Optics Corp. sold for $7.5 million in 1984 after Manian used the same technology from special effects for doctors. He found a way to write images from CT scans and MRIs directly on to film from the computer. The only catch was that it required a brand-new type of film - and Manian was able to persuade Kodak to invent it for him.

The science of optics has proved a lucrative field for Manian, though perhaps an unlikely one for someone who lost his eye in an accident at the age of three. But as Manian said, science is science. You don't necessarily have to see something to know it's right. And in fact, when he starts out on a project, he is often guided by what he doesn't know, rather than what he does.
