New York, N.Y.
Paul White, executive director of Transportation Alternatives, a transit advocacy group that lobbied hard for the Safe Routes program, said DOT has "virtually nothing to show" two years after it trumpeted the plan. While Safe Routes has yet to yield tangible results, the department has installed speed bumps and crosswalk signs at hundreds of schools across the city since the launch of the program, largely in response to complaints.
