Abstract (Document Summary)

Under [Tony Robbins]' spell, Hal sees Rosemary ([Gwyneth Paltrow]), a sweet Peace Corps volunteer, as a willowy sexpot - with Paltrow's chest and butt slightly augmented - while everyone else sees a mountain of blubber.

Paltrow carries her weight, to a point, by suggesting the awkwardness and self-consciousness of a morbidly obese person who's skeptical of Hal's attentions in a way that's touching. But her comic timing is only OK; she's no [Cameron Diaz].

Gwyneth Paltrow (in a rare "Shallow Hal" scene as her slender self) shares a tender moment over a gigantic chocolate shake with [Jack Black], who is only able to see her as a willowy sexpot while others see her as a 300-pound mountain of blubber.
