Stealing [Derek Jeter] from across town would relieve so much of the sting of watching the Yankees rule baseball for so long that no number is too high to imagine. It's only a fantasy at this stage, but the threat is very real. Sure, Jeter's first choice would be to remain a Yankee for his entire career. It's not too difficult to guess what his second choice would be. Just get out a map and point to the closest stadium. They did it a year ago when [Casey Close], Jeter and [Randy Levine] shook hands on a seven-year, $118.5 million extension that would have paid Jeter a hair under $17 million a year. Jeter is too sure a thing to ever decrease in value at such a young age, so naturally his value has increased. So offer him a few dollars short of $20 million a year and see if he bites. SIGN HIM NOW! Every day Yankees don't lock up Derek Jeter long term is one day closer to Jeter possibly crossing town and joining Mets as free agent, Tom Keegan says.New York Post: Charles Wenzelberg Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
