Abstract (Document Summary)

"It was such an invigorating intellectual exercise that it persuaded me it would be a great educational experience for the entire community," [Stuart Rabinowitz] said. "Many people talk about the lack of engagement among the young in the political process. This is the antidote to that." Last year Hofstra launched a $1.5-million center for presidential studies.

Hofstra is competing against previous hosts including North Carolina's Wake Forest, Washington University in St. Louis, Arizona State University, Centre College in Danbury, Ky., and University of Miami, which hosted the last debate in 2004.

Hofstra's only competition from the Northeast is Wesleyan University in Connecticut. The last presidential debate in the region was held in Boston in 2000. But Hofstra officials say New York hasn't had a debate since 1960 when John F. Kennedy and then- Vice President Richard M. Nixon met in a Manhattan TV studio.
