Abstract (Document Summary)

[Davis], a senior linebacker/running back at Christopher Columbus, decided on Syracuse University early this summer. The reason was simple: Syracuse had the mix of academics and athletics that prompted Davis to choose the Orangemen over Maryland, Iowa, Duke and Colorado.

That emphasis is one reason his brother Omar, a computer programmer, owns his own networking business, and why his sister Diana is a successful accountant with a mortgage company. Columbus' academic coach, Frank Selby, said Davis has progressed well academically and has already met the NCAA clearinghouse requirements. "He's an extremely smart kid," Selby said. "He will do fine in college."
