NINE INCH NAILS "The Fragile" (Nothing/Interscope) TEN YEARS AGO, Nine Inch Nails mastermind Trent Reznor released "Pretty Hate Machine," the record that brought the grating sounds and manic depressive themes of industrial music into the mainstream. Five years later, he consolidated his position at the vanguard of industrial rock with "The Downward Spiral," which offered an even more abrasive glimpse into his heart of darkness.
But the blend of pop, metal and experimental noise that Reznor helped pioneer is no longer a genre on the cutting edge. An entire generation of Nu-Metal artists such as Orgy, Marilyn Manson and Rob Zombie have all found degrees of chart success using variations of the Nine Inch Nails formula.
