Observations about race also marked the ceremony, starting with the processional entrance of about 100 graduates of 1938. Their all-white faces contrasted with the many races of this year's graduates.
"The 93 different ethnic groups living in Brooklyn make us a special community," Borough President Howard Golden said, urging the graduates to commit themselves to helping the underprivileged.
