1737 Henry Hains becomes the first person to be buried in the graveyard of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church. 1740 The Rev. George Whitfield preaches to 3,000 people under the white oak tree of the Basking Ridge Presbyterian Church during the Great Awakening, the early 18th century revival of religion in America. 1750 The Basking Ridge Classical School designed to prepare young men for college, is established in Basking Ridge by Dr. Samuel Kennedy, fourth pastor of the Presbyterian Church. 1758 Francis Bernard arrives from England to become royal governor of New Jersey, a post he holds for two years. 1760s Bernards is home to encampments of the Lenni Lenape Indians, a branch of the Delawares (part of the Algonquin Nation).
