The school system is losing a crop of dedicated veteran educators such as Beard, who don't want to pay increases in their retirement contribution or health benefits. During the recent legislative session, lawmakers approved increases in health-care costs for educators beginning in January, and retirement contributions also are set to increase in the new year.
