No second chances for these `teachers'
[Final Edition]

Cambridge, Ont.
Upon discovering her presence in the Barrie school, parents demonstrated their disbelief and anger and demanded a meeting with the Simcoe board. They were told [Laura Schlater] "posed no threat to students". At this writing she remains in the classroom, while some parents have felt compelled to pull their children out. If a convicted child sex offender, like Laura Schlater, is allowed to teach in Ontario, then [Paul Black], who was charged and tried, not found genuinely innocent, mind you, but not technically convicted either, can expect to pick up his teaching career sometime soon. As shocking a thought as that may be, the abominable precedent set by the Ontario College of Teachers can hardly suggest anything else. It will be hard put to explain Schlater's reinstatement and not Black's. Thanks to the precedent now set by the Waterloo Region District School Board, neither Black nor Schlater will find themselves in a Cambridge classroom. This is one time our school board hit the mark - and it's an A-plus in my books. Class dismissed. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
