Abstract (Document Summary)

The victory by [Andrew L. Warren] and [Mark S. Schweiker] apparently indicates that the electorate is weary of the fight against the Point Pleasant water project waged by Democratic Commissioners Carl F. Fonash and Lucille M. Trench.

With 234 of 272 precincts reporting, the unofficial vote was Schweiker, 55,287; Warren, 53,161; Fonash, 41,223, and Trench, 41,276.

Warren held on to win the minority seat in the 1983 election and in1986 he staged an unsuccessful candidacy for State Senate. Party leaders were known to be searching for an alternative candidate for commissioner this year, but Warren, a 44-year-old Warminster Township resident, was able to win a heated spring primary against conservative leader Charles R. Gerow.
