Abstract (Document Summary)

Currently, [John Coulbourn]'s received permission to plant the mixture -- called Trophy Deer Clover -- on reclaimed state-owned strip mines in Clinton County. Usually grass is planted to prevent erosion during reclamation operations but the clover serves double duty in supplying better nutrition for deer and turkeys.

Most organized Pennsylvania camps have had no problem getting permission of absentee landowners and others to plant the clover, which provides nutrition and keeps deer frequenting a particular area, Coulbourn believes.

In one such area, Coulbourn clearcut a 17-acre plot and planted 13 acres in clover. Second growth trees and brush along the edges are cut back every couple years, allowing for shoots to grow from stumps and natural reclamation to take place, offering additional food plus cover for deer and wild turkeys.
