Michael F. Flynn, 43, son of Joseph and Rita Flynn of Folk Street on Easton's South Side, has been awarded the 1991 Compton Crook Award for his first novel, "In the Country of the Blind" by Baen Books. The award is presented annually by the Baltimore Science Fiction Society to the best first novel of the year in the science fiction or fantasy fields.

Flynn's second novel, "Fallen Angels," a collaboration with best- selling authors Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, will appear in July from Baen Books. A collection of short fiction, "The Nanotech Chronicles," also by Baen, is set for a September release.
