Abstract (Document Summary)

Before the vote last week, Prime Minister Rabin severely reprimanded [Ya'acov Shefi], reportedly warning him that he would "throw him out of the faction" if he cast his ballot against the budget.

Ra'anan Cohen said Shefi could not have behaved otherwise. The election system had become regional and Shefi had to take his constituents into consideration, said Cohen.

Knesset labor and social affairs committee chairman Amir Peretz said the voters should be the ones to decide whether or not to punish Shefi. Peretz said he rejected Rabin's "incitement" against the workers.
