This is because Hebrew has far more homonyms than English, for example, and because vowels often determine the proper conjugation of verbs, they said. Hebrew without vowels doesn't provide enough phonetic information to determine a word's meaning immediately, which slows the reading process even among native Israelis, they discovered.
