She was born in Riga, and moved with her family to South Africa when she was eight years old. She took her B.A. in English literature at Cape Town University. She was awarded a scholarship to Newnham College, Cambridge, where she earned her her Ph.D. and spent 14 years as a research fellow and assistant lecturer. Among her students there was the poet Sylvia Plath, who wrote that [DOROTHEA KROOK-GILEAD] was her ideal of a successful career woman and wonderful human being. While at Newnham, Krook published the first of her major critical works, Three Traditions of Moral Thought.
