Abstract (Document Summary)

BERLIN - A German theater has revived a World War II drama written by a Nazi playwright, despite protests and criticism by Holocaust survivors and politicians that the work is a piece of Nazi propaganda.

[Hans Rehberg] was an early member of the Nazi party and rose to prominence during the Third Reich. His plays were praised in Nazi newspapers and he also wrote a hymn for Adolf Hitler's 50th birthday. He died in 1963.

Critics including author Ralph Giordano, a Holocaust survivor, and the local branch of the Greens party, the junior partner in Germany's federal government, argue that Rehberg was a Nazi apologist and that showing his work is an affront to Nazi victims.
