Abstract (Document Summary)

[Hassan], a veteran leader of the Fatah organization and close aide to PA Chairman Yasser Arafat, was speaking at a symposium held in Ramallah by the Palestinian Institute for the Study of Democracy, Mawaten. The symposium was held under the title "The role of Fatah in the current phase."

Hassan's threats are seen as an attempt to appease Palestinian hardliners, especially disgruntled members of the armed wing of [Fatah], the Aksa Martyrs' Brigades, who want to pursue their armed attacks against Israel. His statements are also directed at top Fatah leaders in the West Bank and Gaza Strip who have criticized the PA for continuing to stick to the peace process despite IDF measures against the Palestinians.
