Abstract (Document Summary)

President Moshe Katsav decided yesterday to reduce the jail term of Margalit Har-Shefi and release her on August 10, after she completes two-thirds of her sentence. Har- Shefi was sentenced to nine months in prison for failing to report Yigal Amir's plans to assassinate prime minister Yitzhak Rabin. Katsav preempted the parole board, which ruled on June 25 that Har-Shefi could apply to be released on August 10.

In giving his reasons, he mentioned that he was releasing her on the date recommended by the State Attorney's Office, that he had consulted with former General Security Service heads Ami Ayalon and Carmi Gillon, and that the GSS had not opposed the early release. He also pointed out that Har-Shefi was having a hard time following Jewish ritual because her prison did not have a religious section, and took into account that she had suffered for over five years between the time the allegations first arose and the time she went to prison. During this time, wrote Katsav, Har-Shefi suffered various restrictions in her work, education, and social life.

The statement pointed out that the parole board had found that Har- Shefi had not expressed regret for her behavior and stressed that Katsav said he was convinced Har-Shefi is now aware of the gravity of her actions.
