Abstract (Document Summary)

The incident followed Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's announcement of the renewal of security cooperation with the Palestinians and confirmation that General Security Service head Avi Dichter had met with Palestinian General Intelligence Service head Amin al-Hindi at the Erez checkpoint on Saturday night for security discussions.

In the meeting on Saturday night between Dichter and al-Hindi, Israel demanded that the Palestinians recapture the terrorists set free by the PA several months ago and halt the violence before peace talks between the two can be renewed. Conversely, the Palestinians called on Israel to lift all the restrictions imposed on the PA- controlled areas as a basis for renewing negotiations.

In the Gaza Strip area, shots were fired at soldiers near the Erez crossing industrial site, and at army posts near the Gush Katif community of Gadid. Shortly after midnight on Saturday, Palestinians in Khan Yunis fired an anti-tank missile at the Neveh Dekalim industrial site.
