The Hamas movement vowed yesterday to carry out more attacks on Israel, after a suicide bomber blew himself up in Netanya killing three Israelis and himself, and wounding over 60 people. However, the movement did not take responsibility for the attack. Hamas spokesman Mahmoud Zahar said he had no idea who was behind the attack. Hamas spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin said yesterday that Hamas would continue attacking Israelis till the eradication of the occupation, Israel Radio reported. Yassin said the Israelis would "pay a price in accordance with the price paid by the Palestinian people." Bassam Abu Sharif, an adviser to Palestinian Authority Chairman Yasser Arafat, said in a telephone interview from Jordan that such attacks on civilians are unacceptable. "We condemn the attack in Netanya, but at the same time the Israelis must understand that the economic siege and Israel's refusal to implement UN Resolution 242 [which calls for a return of land occupied in the 1967 war] will give extremists more opportunities... Going back to the negotiations to end the occupation is the only way to ensure security," he said. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
