American Indians, bikers and Jews - US Sen. Ben Nighthorse Campbell is a proud member of the first two of these demographic groups, and a big fan of the third. Relaxing in the lobby of Tel Aviv's Holiday Inn last week, Campbell was finishing up a tour of Israel with AIPAC, the American Jewish Israel lobby. He'd just come back from checking out the local Harley-Davidson dealership. "No," he replies. "We don't have this thing like the African-Americans have of changing our name every 10 or 15 years. Indians have never had that problem. When we're talking to each other, we call ourselves Indians. Or Native Americans. Or Original Americans. Or First Americans." It doesn't matter, he says, because one name is as incorrect as the next. Many anthropologists have taken to calling the American Indians "aborigines." Even the commonly-known names of Indian tribes - like Cheyenne, Sioux, or Apache - didn't come from any of the Indian tribal languages. Reproduced with permission of the copyright owner.
