Larry Sanger unveiled www.citizendium.org on Monday. It looks very much like Wikipedia, but has stricter rules about who can create and edit posts. One criticism frequently leveled against Wikipedia has been that it is so easy to edit that it is prone to vandalism - a fact that TV comedian Steven Colbert has mocked on his show The Colbert Report by rewriting passages during the show.
"Let's say we only have one-quarter of the contributors of Wikipedia," said Sanger, who retired from Wikipedia in 2002. "Would we be able to create a credible competitor for Wikipedia within not too many years? Yes, I think."
