Abstract (Document Summary)

When the author's nephew emailed her for advice on learning Finnish, she had three immediate reactions: 1. See what your public library can lend you. 2. Look into an immersion language course in Finland. 3. Investigate language-learning software programs. In fact, it was the latter disappointment that prompted his email to the author. Her quest, then, was to find what is available through libraries, what you can acquire on your own, and how various language-learning software products compare. In 2012, Rocket Languages introduced a dashboard structure as the homepage for each language. Circles at the top track progress in interactive audio lessons, language and culture lessons, and survival kit. Meanwhile, at its Web site, Mango Languages boasts that it currently serves one in five North American libraries. Mango Basic exists to provide a quick introduction to both essential vocabulary and culture.
