Co-founder Tom Leighton officially founded Cambridge, MA-based Akamai Technologies in August 1998. Akamai's core product is its EdgePlatform, which consists of more than 30,000 Web servers in 750 cities in 70 countries. Akamai technology is spread out in 1,000 different ISPs in thousands of locations, Leighton says. Leighton says customers receive portal access that lets them track activity on their sites, from real-time knowledge of how many hits their sites receive to how much demand exists for various parts of their sites. Leighton says Akamai's goal over the next 5 years is to make each of its current initiatives as large as the overall company is today. Another development is dynamic site acceleration for ecommerce, which has already gained much traction.
